How to Update Duration by Linking Quantities
When you link quantities to a task, the duration can be automatically calculated based on the quantity amounts and consumption rates across different locations.
Link Quantities to a Task
- Navigate to Setup > Quantities.
- Open the Quantity details panel by double-clicking on a cell in the Linked Tasks column or clicking the icon in the toolbar.
- Link the task to the quantity.
Review Linked Quantities in Task Details
- Go to any scheduling view (Takt Time, Flowline, Gantt, Network, Table, or Grid).
- Open the Task details panel for the linked task.
- Navigate to the Quantities tab to view the linked quantities in the list.
Adjust Duration Settings
- Go to the General tab in the Task details panel.
- Edit the Duration field with your desired value.
- Switch to the Durations tab to verify the duration and production factor for each location task.
Manage Location Precision and Sequence
- Go to the Locations tab in the Task details panel.
- Review the checked locations that match the quantities by location. Note that location checkboxes are disabled and cannot be added or removed when linked to quantities.
- Change the location precision to a higher level (e.g., from 2 to 1) to adjust the view. Locations shown will match both the selected precision and the quantities' location precision.
- Change the location precision to a lower level (e.g., from 1 to 2) if needed.
- Adjust the location sequence by dragging and dropping locations into your preferred order.
Edit Durations for Location Tasks
- Go to the Durations tab in the Task details panel.
- Edit the Duration field with a valid value (0 to the maximum limit of days). The new production factor per location task will update automatically.
- Alternatively, edit the Duration for a single location task. The production factor and total duration for the subtask will update accordingly.
- Edit the Production factor for a single location task. The duration for that location task and the total duration for the subtask will recalculate.
Bulk Edit Durations for Multiple Location Tasks
- In the Durations tab, select multiple location tasks.
- Click the toolbar option Change duration to edit durations for all selected tasks. Production factors will update accordingly.
- Alternatively, use the toolbar option Change production factor to adjust production factors. Durations will recalculate for all selected location tasks.
Work with Resources and Crew
- Go to the Resources tab in the Task details panel.
- Add a crew (without adding resources yet) and edit the Duration. The crew count will round based on the duration value.
- Edit the Crew count with a valid positive integer to update the duration automatically.
- Add a resource to the crew. Note that adding the resource itself does not change the duration.
- Edit the Count for the resource with a valid numeric value (0.001 or higher) to adjust the duration.
- Edit the Productivity with a valid numeric value (0.001 or higher) to recalculate the duration.
- Set Productivity to "0" if you want the resource treated as workforce = "1" (ignoring Count and Crew count values).
Note: For split subtasks, the location for the current subtask appears in a darker grey than locations for other related subtasks.
How to Update Duration by Resources (No Linked Quantities)
For tasks without linked quantities, you can control whether the duration is automatically updated based on resource assignments.
Add Crew to a Task
- Open the Task details panel for a task that has no linked quantities.
- Go to the Resources tab.
- Add a crew (but do not add any resources to the crew yet).
Duration Updates with Crew Count
- Disable the Update duration by resources toggle.
- Edit the Crew count with a valid numeric integer. The duration will remain unchanged.
- Enable the Update duration by resources toggle.
- Edit the Crew count again. The duration will now update automatically based on the crew count.
Add Resources and Control Duration Updates
- Add a resource to the crew. The duration will not change when you first add the resource.
- Disable the Update duration by resources toggle.
- Edit the Count for the resource with a valid number. The duration will not change.
- Edit the Productivity with a valid number. The duration will remain unchanged.
Handle Zero Productivity
- Set the Productivity to "0". The duration will not change, and the Update duration by resources toggle will be disabled and cannot be re-enabled.
- Add one more resource to the crew. The duration remains unchanged, but the Update duration by resources toggle can now be enabled again.
Enable Automatic Duration Updates
- Enable the Update duration by resources toggle. The duration will update to reflect the current resource configuration.
- Edit the Crew count with a valid integer. The duration will update automatically.
- Edit the Count for a resource with a valid number. The duration will recalculate accordingly.
- Edit the Productivity for a resource with a valid number. The duration will adjust based on the new productivity value.
Important: When at least one resource has a productivity of "0", the Update duration by resources toggle is disabled and cannot be enabled until you adjust the productivity or add additional resources.
Tip: Use the Update duration by resources toggle to quickly switch between manual duration control and automatic calculation based on your resource assignments.
How to Work with Zero Consumption Rate
When a quantity has a consumption rate of 0, it results in a duration of 0 for linked tasks. You can override this behavior by setting a specific consumption rate for individual task-quantity links.
Set Default Consumption Rate to Zero and Link Tasks
- Navigate to Setup > Quantities.
- Set the default Consumption Rate to 0 for a quantity.
- Open the Quantity details panel by double-clicking on a cell in the Linked Tasks column or clicking the icon in the toolbar.
- Link a task to this quantity.
Review Zero Duration in Task Details
- Go to any scheduling view (Takt Time, Flowline, Gantt, Network, Table, or Grid).
- Open the Task details panel for the linked task.
- Go to the Duration tab. All duration values will be 0.
Override with Specific Consumption Rate
- Go to the Quantities tab in the Task details panel.
- Edit the italicized Consumption Rate value by entering a valid value higher than 0.
- Observe that the consumption rate is now displayed in normal font (not italic), and the Work value shows the correct hours of work (calculated as Quantities × Consumption Rate).
- Go to the Duration tab to verify that duration values now correctly correspond to the work per location.
Reset Consumption Rate to Default
- Go to the Quantities tab in the Task details panel.
- Right-click on the Consumption Rate cell.
- Select Reset consumption rate from the context menu.
- The consumption rate value will now be shown in italic font again, and the Work value will return to 0.
Work with Multiple Quantities
- In the Quantities tab, link another quantity that has:
- Quantities on some of the same and different locations
- A consumption rate higher than 0
- Verify that the Work value is correct and the quantities by location are accurate.
Update Duration Options with Mixed Consumption Rates
- Go to the Duration tab.
- Select all rows by holding Ctrl or Shift while clicking.
- Click the more icon (three dots) in the toolbar.
- Notice that the Update duration option is now enabled (it was disabled when all consumption rates were 0).
- Click Update duration and set a new duration value. Duration and production factor values will update only for locations where the linked quantity has a consumption rate higher than 0. Locations covered only by the quantity with consumption rate = 0 will remain at 0 duration.
Distribute Duration Among Location Tasks
- In the Duration tab, click the more icon in the toolbar.
- Select Distribute current duration among all location tasks.
- Duration and production factor values will update for locations where the linked quantity has a consumption rate higher than 0. Locations covered only by the quantity with consumption rate = 0 will continue to show 0 duration.
Note: When a consumption rate is shown in italic font, it indicates that the default consumption rate is being used. When shown in normal font, it means a specific consumption rate has been set for that task-quantity link.
Important: The Update duration option is disabled when all linked quantities have a consumption rate of 0. Link at least one quantity with a consumption rate higher than 0 to enable duration updates.
