Understanding the Location Breakdown Structure
Locations define the physical structure of your project - such as buildings, floors, or zones - and control how tasks are sequenced in your schedule. You can build a multi-level location hierarchy and reorder locations at any time.
Note: A default top-level location named Project is created automatically when you set up a new schedule. All locations you add will be nested within it.
How to Add Locations
- Open your schedule and go to Setup > Locations in the left navigation.
- Click the Add location button (+) in the toolbar to add a top-level location under Project.
- Select a location in the list and click Add sub-location to open the Add location dialog.
- Enter a name in the name field. The field is required — the Save button stays disabled until a name is provided.
- Click Save to confirm. The sub-location appears nested under the selected parent.
- Repeat steps 3–5 to add further sub-levels. Each new level is labelled with its depth (e.g. Location level 2, Location level 3).
Tip: Your locations will appear in the same order in the Takt Time and Flowline scheduling views.
How to Edit Location Names
- Go to Setup > Locations.
- Double-click on any location name to edit it inline.
- Type the new name and press Enter or click away to confirm.
- To rename the location level labels (e.g. "Building", "Floor"), click Edit location levels in the toolbar.
- Update the level names in the Location levels dialog and close it. New locations added will use the updated labels.
- To add a new location level, click Add location level inside the dialog. The new level appears with a default name.
- Click the new level's name cell, type your preferred name, and click the tick mark to confirm.
How to Delete Locations
- Go to Setup > Locations.
- Right-click on the location you want to remove and select Delete.
- Deleting a parent location also removes all sub-locations nested within it.
Important: A location cannot be deleted if it has tasks assigned to it. The Delete button will be disabled and a message will appear: "Locations cannot be deleted because it has location tasks assigned." Reassign or remove the tasks first.
How to Reorder Locations
- Go to Setup > Locations.
- Click and drag a sub-location to a new position within the list. You can move it above or below other locations, or into a different parent location.
- Verify the updated order in the Takt Time or Flowline view — the schedule location order updates automatically.
Resetting task location order after reordering
When you move a location, existing tasks retain their previous location sequence. If a task's order no longer matches the updated schedule order, you can reset it:
- Open the task whose location order you want to reset.
- Click More (···) within the task details.
- Select Reset to location order. The task's location sequence updates to match the current schedule order and the option becomes disabled.
Tip: The Reset to location order option is only enabled when a task's location sequence differs from the current schedule location order.
